Super14: Marius Joubert ready, Joe still crocked

Springbok centre Marius Joubert has recovered from his injury problems and will be ready to start the Super 14 season for the Stormers.

According to Stormers coach Kobus van der Merwe, Joubert has made excellent progress after being ruled out of the second half of the 2005 season with a shoulder injury which had been a niggling problem for much of the early part of last year.

One of the IRB’s five player’s of the year in 2004, a season in which he capped his performances with a try-scoring hattrick against the All Blacks in Johannesburg, Joubert experienced a miserable 2005.

He was one of the players most criticised when the Stormers lost form in the Super 12, and was considered fortunate to retain his place after a succession of poor performances. The Stormers coach of the time, Gert Smal, eventually dropped him towards the end of the season as Jean de Villiers made a successful switch from wing to centre.

But Bok coach Jake White showed his immense regard for and faith in Joubert when he retained him in his plans despite his poor Super 12 run. He played in the opening test of the year against Uruguay and also in the two home tests against France before eventually making way for Jaque Fourie.

Joubert, who played almost non-stop through the previous season, was perhaps showing the effects of being used too often, and some were unsurprised when he had to sit out from the end of July with his injury problem.

However, he has played a full part in the Stormers’ off-season training programme, and Van der Merwe reckons he will be available for the first Super 14 match against the Cats in Johannesburg.

“Marius has made a full recovery and there is now no reason why we should not select him to play. He will be ready for our opening game and we are extremely pleased about that,” said Van der Merwe.

The only problem worrying Van der Merwe as the new season approaches at a hectic pace is the condition of Springbok No8 Joe van Niekerk.

“Joe has not made as quick a recovery from his wrist injury (that kept him out of the last Springbok tour) as we had hoped. We anticipate now that he will only be ready for the third match of the Super 14 season at the earliest,” said Van der Merwe.

“But we are not too worried about that. We boast a lot of depth at loose-forward and someone like Adri (Badenhorst) has a lot of experience. The other players who had injury problems at the end of last year are all back in training. That includes Tonderai Chavhanga and Werner Greeff.”

The Stormers play their first warmup match on 21 January, when they will be looking to measure their off-season progress against the Bulls at Newlands. The following week they tackle the South Eastern Cape Spears in Wellington.
