Super 14: Bekker training with the Stormers

Andries Bekker is fit and training with the Stormers according to

Bekker is rated very highly by not only Nick Mallet, but also Heynecke Meyer and Jake White at age 22 and Mallett seems to be earmark him as the next Bakkies Botha type lock. This could bode very well for the Springboks’ cause as the lock position is one where we have serious lack of depth.

This means that the Stormers will have the services of Bekker, Ross Skeate, Gerrie Britz and Duimpie Theron available for the Super 14 campaign. Rob Linde was ruled out of the group due to a slipped disc.
Why do I get the feeling that things is not as bad in Stormers country as what everybody thinks.

Skeate and Bekker impressed me in the little of the CC they did play. We all know that Skeate can be an enforcer aswell. Just ask Boela. It seems to me that the biggest problem may lie with the props. No 2 is covered, the loosies are covered and locks, well not bad.
We will just have to see how it goes,im holding thumbs!

I guess alot of people will do that not only for the Stormers.

BTW do you know what the origin is of the saying "holding thumbs for you" ?

Skeate's not an enforcer, he's a vuilgat!;)

Anyway, I think for the Stormers to prosper, they need to stick to Skeate and Bekker, they may not make an impact in the S14 this year, but with time they will grow. Experience is all they need.
Hey Donner,no i dont know but please enlighten me.

In the very old days the people believed that the bad omens was located in the thumbs and by holding them in your palm will keep them from hurting other people in their quests. Hence the saying "I'll be holding my thumbs for you"

Why do you say that Skeate is a vuilgat? Obviously not because he pulled a Bakkies on poor Boela.
No Donner, Bakkies would never attack from behind, he'll just scratch your eyes while the refs not watching and your're defenseless at the bottom of a ruck! I say he's a vuilgat cos he attacked the poor oke from behind. Which makes it even worse is that Boela is such a law abiding citizen of the rugby field. He has never done anything untoward on the field!
Andries gaan dit nog ver bring in die rugby wereld. Wat my egter bekommer is dat hy maklik beserings opdoen, soos Wilkinson. Onthou jul nog sy pa, Hennie?

I know Bakkies is the example of a good and clean player, never to get involved in any of the ball incidents. Much like Sean Fitzpatrick.

Hennie?????? Wat het hy gespeel? Heelagter????
Hennie Bekker. Hy is nou iets soos "tegniese ???" by WP.
Ek het toevallig 'n prent van Andries langs my naam. Klik daarop om 'n groter weergawe te sien.
Yes Donner, now you have it. They all just aspire to be good players and never get involved in the off the ball incidents, like their role model James Dalton.
Donner, I forgot, I still wanted to thank you for your New Years message, sorry I didn't reply. Happy new year to you and the family as well.
Hennie Bekker and Flippie van der Merwe toured New Zealand as members of the Springbok team that was subjected to the infamous flour-bomb attacks in Tests against the 1981 All Blacks.

These days the sons of the two Springboks, Andries Bekker and Francois van der Merwe, are regular travellers with the Western Province under-20 team, in which they are the first-choice locks.

Both attract a fair amount of attention because fans all over South Africa recall that their fathers rank among the tallest (2.02m) and heaviest (130kg) players ever to don the Springbok jersey.

Both 20-year-olds have shown great potential and it may not be long before they are also capped for the Springboks. Andries Bekker has already been capped for the SA under-21 team that played in the IRB World Championships in England in June.

Francois van der Merwe was capped for the SA under-19s at last year's World Championships in Italy, and also played for the SA Schools Academy XV in 2000.

Johannesburg's Don McDonald, a rugby researcher, said former Boks Bekker and Van der Merwe had long been regarded as the tallest and heaviest SA rugby players.

"However, a few Boks have surpassed or matched those marks. For instance, 'Vleis' Visagie weighed 136kg and Adolf Malan's height was recorded at 2.02m."

Bekker snr said some family members on his mother's side were exceptionally tall. "Andries has grown past me. The last time we measured him he was 2.05m. I have a cousin, Charl Blignaut, who is at least two centimetres taller than me."

Bekker made his Bok debut in the first Test against the All Blacks, in Christchurch, 22 years ago.

Van der Merwe snr, who made his debut in the second Test as a prop against the Kiwis at Eden Park, was more forthright when explaining his body structure. "Our people are from the Kalahari. We eat lots of meat."

Bekker snr said his son's height was, obviously, a huge advantage in lineouts. "Andries works well in the lineouts and is equipped for the modern-day role expected from locks. He has superb ball skills and a high work rate."

Van der Merwe snr lives in Klerksdorp and is not able to watch Francois regularly. But when the WP under-20 team play in the Free State or Gauteng, he's on the sideline.

"I'm happy with the way he's playing. The way he cleans out at the rucks reminds me of old-fashioned locks. He tackles hard and plays with guts."

A memorable match for Francois was the recent under-20 encounter between Western Province and Free State at Newlands.

"My 18-year-old brother, Phillip, who is still at Grey College, was in the Free State side. It was the first time I'd played against him - he also plays lock."

Just pulling your leg.

Will you be joining the Brannasnacht?

This week might be even more interesting than last week.
Ek het dit gevind op Sunday Times se website...
Reinhardt....Paulo Coelho is the man, nice choice boety.oh and thanks Donner.
hehe Donner, solank dit net sy been bly!
Donner, if we can stick to our original names, otherwise I'm leaving early again. I was extremely confused when I logged on last week.

OK this time we will insist on the RugRats telling us who they really are, aswell some information on the character they choose.

Remember it is the time for having fun; no rugby.
Donner, do I ever get to serious? I know the format of Brannasnacht, normally don't join in, cos the wife will kill me if I spend the entire evening on the web, rather than with her and the kids. Will just have to get them to join in then.

Young Andies seems to have gotten his mother's looks.

Hennie was the kind of oke who would make rugby photographers' camera lenses crack.
Talking about vuilgat, I remember the incident on Newlands whem WP played EP, roundabout 1982 or so.
The whistle went, Schalk Burger (the original one) walked up to Bekker, grabbed his jersey and hit him a hell of a shot between the eyes with his head.
Sommer just like that.
Nice info you added, Reinhardt!
