Other Sport: Cricket - Prince made vice-captain

Ashwell Prince, South Africa's middle-order batsman, has been named vice-captain of the side following Jacques Kallis's departure home due to a shoulder injury.

Prince, 28, has been a regular member of the South African one-day side for over a year now, contributing key knocks apart from being a superb asset in the field.

He has played 15 Tests and 33 one-day internationals, and included in his resume is the fact that he captained South Africa A and the former Western-Boland franchise on the South African domestic circuit.

Haroon Lorgat, the convenor of South Africa's selection panel, said today that these two factors were an important factor in Prince getting the nod. "Ashwell is now well established and respected as a senior member in the Proteas' squad. He will provide excellent support to Graeme Smith in the absence of Jacques Kallis," Lorgat said.

"He has also played representative cricket at all levels from Under-13 to the national team, and so is fully conversant with the ethos of South African cricket."

Kallis, the third South African to return home during the tour to Australia, flew back in order to ensure his full fitness for the return series against Australia, which starts at the end of February.

You saw it here first thanks to our "on the ball" readers!!!

cheers JJ

on the article, eish, not too sure, he is not a bad cricketer, but never impressed as province captain...
Thanks JJ,

Ashwell just sort out that arrogant captain of us while you are there.

I must say, seems the WP Cricket union is breeding captains by the dozen. Maybe that is the problem. Too many chiefs and no indians

shit donner, did not even win one standard bank cup game - something wrong there

Half the Cobra side is in Oz, not? Before that on the sub-continent.

I have always liked Prince and it seems that he had settled in well in International Cricket

I doubt whether he will be staging a revolt against Smith but as long as he keeos his form and stay the Gentleman- I am happy.

boertjie

Half the Titans squad was also there and they reached the final.

I like Ashwell. Hope he does well as vice skipper.

Although I heard some Aussie say that the position vice-captain is worth a bucket of warm spit.

true boertjie. but if that is the depth of our cricket, i am worried

Didnt he win the Supersport Series last 2004 as captain? I'm sure he lead them to victory...

i think he's a better bet than Kallis. Since when is Kallis captain material? BWAHAHHAHAHAA

He's a great player but not a motivator and too much of an introvert. Also best buddies with mondi's favourite keeper, mark boucher.

he is a classy player wpw, but captain???

supersport is not one day cricket.

he is a good test player, no doubt, one day - eish.

but its my opinion.

on kallis, with you 100% - no captain.

i am actually dead against a top line batsman, or bowler, selected as captain. captains should be working out the opposition at all times and not worry about line and length or how the new ball will play on this pitch.

I agree regarding a bowler not being captain but most of the all time great captains were mainly batsmen.

You know what the funny thing is?
Prince's OD average is currently better than his test average...

I think they should just stop putting pressure on him in OD games and telling him to play like Jonty, leave the oke to play his natural game and he will improve...

good point wpw....
Not a bad call, though it grates me to see the team dominated by WP.
Heheheh

Postman who do you want there?

Where is Henderson, Klusener?? Or is our Cobra captain still adverse to them?
eltorros
klusener is passed it. he is a flippin selfinsh player. a few weeks ago they were playing a 20/20 match and were not doing to well chasing down the opposition's score. what they really needed was someone like klusener to come in and really play a good knock. he ended up coming in at no 9 when the game was over as a contest.
and these are the actions of the captain? he needs to be replaced as dolphins captain...

wpw
Klusener is still the best - he has a major attitude problem and untill he gets over it I agree we dont need him.
What you referred to is exactly his problem.
